And I Plan To Stay A Black Motherfucka

Curtis Mayfield

Trying to find music for the Blaxploitation post, I intended to just scan through some songs on each album. Which I did, until I pulled out Superfly. I ended up listening to the whole thing. I was a little, little kid when I first saw the movie, and I remember the music was tight and that Priest was the coolest brutha on the street. When I got a little older and listened to the album without the movie, I realized that they were polar opposites of each other. Curtis’s lyrics were a warning, a rebuttal to the movie and it’s depiction. I think that was when I really tried to start listening to the lyrics of songs. Back when you could understand them. And candy bars were 25 cents. Yes, I realize I got old there for a minute.
Anyway, I always loved that album. And that brings us to this post. It’s all about love for Curtis and his production for movies in the 70’s. The man wrote/performed/arranged on 6 soundtracks for movies: Superfly, Claudine, Sparkle, A Piece of the Action, Let’s Do It Again and Short Eyes. I’ve tried to include a song from each of them, not necessarily the hits, but ones that always liked to play.

Man, You Come Straight Out of A Comic Book

black belt jones

Man, I miss Blaxploitation movies. Drug pushers and pimps as ghetto heroes. Sticking it to The Man. But the best thing about them was the music. Never mind the poor acting, editing and dialog. We got the theme from Shaft! The entire soundtrack of Curtis Mayfield’s Superfly! We got straight up, hard, gritty funk. And, of course, that music spilled into the everyday, and eventually, hip hop.

Some of these songs are from soundtracks, some are just regular cuts. They’re all songs that remind me to keep The Man’s foot off my neck.
