I got off from work early the other night, and if course I couldn’t sleep. That was because I’ve finally gotten the other turntable up and running. A gift from the Karma Police, it sounds great and has much more bass and punch than the other 2 turntables I have. Why do I need a third turntable? Hey, what do you care? It’s more music for you. And a bonus post this week.
I’ve been listening to a lot of Grace Jones lately, enough to where I’ll give her own post soon. But I never noticed how many cover tunes she has on her albums. At least 3-4 on the ones I have. That inspired me to throw some covers your way.
The Edwin Starr‘s Cloud Nine is from an album full of covers itself. It sounds familiar, but still has his own twang to it.
The muse for this post, Grace’s song was a toss-up, all of her covers are unique from the original , and I couldn’t go wrong with any choice.
Compared to What was one of my favorite songs when I was little. The Les McCann / Eddie Harris jam was an excuse for my little ass to cuss without catching a whoopin’, and I couldn’t pass that up. Roberta Flack doesn’t sound as angry as Les and Eddie , but it’s a slow simmer that’s just about the equal.
I read somewhere that Syreeta‘s first few albums were Stevie Wonder albums, and I get that. He married her and produced her albums, even after they were divorced. but some of the music they made together is just the shit. They made some funky and beautiful songs together. I’m surprised that the beginning of this song hasn’t been sampled yet.
